To answer the anticipated question first, yes, this route can currently be hiked with spikes or bare boots. The recent thaw froze solid last night. I wore snowshoes round-trip because, well, I enjoy wearing them. :) That said ...
The short road walk from the parking area to the trailhead is icy. Spikes helpful here. The ascent to the ridge has a good but not great snowshoe track. There are many divots and wearing snowshoes helped to even out the footing. Between the Piper-Whiteface Link junction and the jeep road there are many frozen postholes. The jeep road has some areas of loose snow that were churned up by snowmobile traffic.
A gorgeous day on top with clear blue skies but the wind was biting so I didn't stay long. |
