Comments
Comments: First on trail again today. Snowshoes were on door to door. From the parking lot the junction of Franconia ridge there was between 2-5 inches of snow covering the trail with some occasional drifts that were deeper and ranged from 6-10 inches. The real fun starts once you reach the ridge. From the junction with Franconia ridge to the summit of Liberty the trail is pretty much one deep drift ranging from shin to knee deep. From Liberty to flume looks like it had not seen much traffic lately. We broke trail through about 8-12 inches. This section of trail was more like tree swimming than hiking, with snow pack so high and trees bent over from heavy snow load the trail corridor is filled in most of the way. The last 200-300 yards up flume was especially drifted with knee to waist drifting the whole way. The return trip to Liberty was much quicker with a broken trail and snow cleared from most trees. Didn’t run into anyone else until .25 mile down liberty spring. Ran into a total of 9 hikers, 3 in snowshoes, 4 barebotoing and not even carrying, and 2 planning to switch into them shortly. Not sure how many were planning to go all the way to flume but if the barebooters went over to flume that trail will be destroyed. The trail was in pretty good shape on our way down but would have been better if others were in snowshoes.
