Comments
Comments: We chose to do this loop in a clockwise direction today. Started in Light traction for about .25 miles thebn switched to snowshoes for the rest of the trip. Wonalancet Ridge Trail was frozen granular up to about 2,000' in very good shape and minimal post holing on a crusty well-packed surface. Above 2,000' the surface was solid with a small amount of packed powder making for enjoyable travel. The Walden trail was great up to Wonalancet-Hedgehog however beyond on the very steep decent the unstable soft powdery snow made for an tedious tiring decent. It has been quite awhile since I was last on the Walden trail and how steep this side is. My recommendation is if you are going to make this loop to do it in a counter-clockwise direction and hit this section going up. The Old Mast Road was pretty chewed up and crusty after bare booters made for uneven surface followed by refreezing over the last few days. With the predicted rain coming it will be anyone's guess what this trail will be like in the coming days.
