 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
We spotted a car at Beaver Brook and started from Seven Dwarfs. $10, no traction until after the private bridge, thank you to all that generously make this awesome route possible. |
|
 | Surface Conditions: |
Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Snow/Ice - Postholes |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes |
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
North Twin crossing was solid, this morning, noting that it has been super cold for two days. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Ignoring the fact that there are heavily snow-laden tree branches arching down toward the trail in a bazillion places, there are a truly countless number of actual, obstructing blowdowns. |
|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
My dog crushed this traverse. I was so proud of her! She is not a fan of wind and did an awesome job getting up and over South Twin in what felt like the 20-30mph winds that were forecasted. Yay Echo! It is really a great route for dogs. |

 | Lost and Found: |
Eric H packed out a frozen 8oz bottle of Gatorade and I found a mostly empty and very well-used Nalgene. |

If you didn’t know where the Gale River Trail crossings were you wouldn’t notice them - there is THAT much snow!
Holy blowdowns, Batman. All of the trails above 3000’ are a war zone. Ignoring the fact that there are heavily snow-laden tree branches arching down toward the trail in a bazillion places, there are a truly countless number of actual, obstructing blowdowns. Spring cleanup is going to be a lot of work. :(
On a lighter note, there is so much snow that the North Twin spur sign is completely buried. Eric H (Mr Speedy Pants) dug to try to find it but was unsuccessful. I have that attempt on video and you can bet your bippy I am posting it because it’s hilarious.
We traversed up to North Twin, South Twin and down to the hut. Some of our group went to Galehead and the rest headed straight down Gale River Trail.
We barebooted until the North Twin water crossing and then the snowshoes went on. We took off the snowshoes on the last mile of Gale River Trail because the snowballing was really tedious.
We were a loose group of 8 hikers, split into two smaller groups based on hiking speed, start time availability and hiking goals LOL. All of us came together in the super steep lower descent off South Twin, and we have the funny photos to prove it!
Thank you to everyone that has snowshoed this recently - the track is gorgeous with just a few postholes here and there. I didn’t personally interview everyone but I am fairly certain that a fabulous day was had by all! |
