Comments
Comments: Though the field melted out, the snowpack elsewhere otherwise survived this week's rain.

We started on Cold Spring Road, which was firm to start, but less so after the Settlement Trail crossing. We put on snowshoes at that point because it wasn't worth the random postholing.

We then did a bushwhack up to a nice view ledge below the Mt. Roberts Trail, hitting the trail just below 2,200 feet. The ledges are starting to melt out, but we were able to stay on snow/ice and keep the snowshoes on. Some monorail has emerged as a result of the melting. Can probably hike this trail with Microspikes tomorrow, but Monday looks like it'll be warm enough to require snowshoes.

Unfortunately a group of postholers decided to continue beyond Mt. Roberts this morning, trashing the trail in places. The snowpack on the ridge is a good 2 to 3 feet deep and not consolidated enough for Microspiking, unless you enjoy shin- to knee-deep postholes. We bailed at the pond and went direct to Faraway, in part to get away from their postholes.

From the access road, we then bushwhacked down the slope in increasingly open woods into the Shannon Brook drainage. Full snow cover, even in the south-facing hardwoods, and generally supportive crust for snowshoes. Some snow was getting a little soft in the sun around noontime, but temperatures stayed in the lower 30s. Partly sunny skies with occasional snow flurries.
