Somewhat short on time and keen to stay low, it was a great day to get after some Ossipee/SNHG red-lining and Winter Ossipee patch. Switched from spikes to snowshoes less than a half mile in and had excellent flotation most of the day. Sentinel Connector and Cannan Mountain not easily discernable in places, but we did see previous snowshoe tracks from time to time, which have gotten larger with melting and refreezing. But, very easy to walk around. Dry exposed rock on the various ledges and punched through to water, once. Snow began to soften the last 30 minutes or so on the way out, but still easy walking. Quite breezy at times. The lower 1/10 of a mile of Gorilla is chopped up, from snowshoe print expansion and bare boot postholing. Easy travel to the proper summits. Canaan Mountain itself is on private property (Chocorua Forestlands, LLC), so unsure the appropriateness of a bushwack without permission.
Absent any significant cold weather, this may be the last weekend to glide effortlessly on top of the snow. Snowshoes are a must, kids, unless you want to first-hand contribute to the destruction of the trail. |
