Today was much better weather than when I tried this last week. Pleasant temps in the 20s with just a light breeze.
With last night's and this morning's cold temps, Lonesome Lake Trail was solid concrete. There are a variety of postholes on display but they are off to the sides. Stay in the middle of the trail and you're good.
The lake was still frozen well enough to walk across which is always a treat. Looks like that is what most people have been doing.
Around Lonesome Lake Trail and Dodge Cutoff had been traveled but were choppy with postholes.
I opted to turn this hike into a loop by descending Hi-Cannon and that goes to show how long it's been since I've been on this trail. :) Coming down Hi-Cannon was sketchy in places due to the steepness, and because it had been postholed and butt slid. If there's a good example of why butt sliding isn't great for those who hike after you, it was this trail today. Crampons would not have been overkill.
Spikes round-trip today were fine but snowshoes will be needed once things warm up again. The snow was becoming softer and looser and I returned around 12:30. |
