Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Wednesday, March 12, 2025
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The lot for Mt Morgan, across the street from the bigger lot for West Rattlesnake, was well-plowed.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: There were some drainage streams along the way, not really "crossings," and easily crossed on rocks, logs, etc. There is a bridge over one stream toward the east end of Morse, but another small stream toward the west end of Morse had no bridge.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There is a mess of downed trees and branches a short way up the Mt Morgan trail, before the Morse intersection. The foot traffic has been going mostly through the mess, with a bit of walk-around. There are a few other downed trees on the route, but not really much of a problem, and a bit of work in the spring with a big saw or sharp axe.

Comments
Comments: Nice day for this loop. Full sun, no wind to speak of, and temps in the 30s for the most part. The cold preceding nights kept the well-traveled path quite firm, suitable for just spikes. The bright sun and moderating temps softened the surface by late morning, except where well-shaded. There were many postholes made by too much traffic without snowshoes (and on C-R by a moose!), and I thought that trying to navigate that in shoes would be quite tedious, for now. Coming down the very steep ledges below the top of Percival was quite tricky, with the snow, ice, and exposed rocks. It was slow-going down there and the steeps below. I can't imagine trying to do this loop without traction of some kind; bare-booting would strike me as foolish.
