 | Comments: |
This was a nighttime eclipse hike. Almost perfectly clear once we got above the undercast. Easy going up Old Bridle on densely packed powder with almost no ice. Greenleaf to Little Haystack was over 50% dry rock, maybe 25% good snow and 15% ice. The ice was generally in small patches and not too dangerous. My slightly dulled microspikes were perfect (now fully dulled after the rock beating). Descent of upper Falling Waters was a bit sketchy because it has been buttslid extensively and was pretty solidly frozen with the nighttime temps. I wish I hadn't left my Hillsounds in the car because I would have switched out my spikes and this section would have been a lot easier. Fortunately there was generally enough solid snow at the edges to avoid the slip-n-slide and also for the most part to avoid postholing. One mandatory buttslide along one of the Falls... I don't remember which one. |
