Surreal bluebird conditions on Mt Monroe and Washington today for my #36 & #37 W48, with temps in the high 20s in the morning, and mid 40s in the afternoon. Trails were firm and fast until around 12 noon—I opted for snowshoes to take full advantage of the televators, while hubby rocked K-10s with much success. There is significant melt with exposed rock and vegetation along the Crawford Path, so we were careful to find placement on snow and ice rather than the fragile alpine zone vegetation. Monroe has an interesting approach that involves some steep side hill action, but everyone was courteous so no one died. Our descent back down Crawford from Washy
to Ammo was a different story, as the full sun and spring-like temps made 7-11 slushies with the trail all the way down to around 3200 feet. At that point the sun hasn’t penetrated the canopy, and our traction was able to do its job. Above 3200 feet is a postholed mess, and with the temperatures refusing to drop below 32, it will make for an interesting hike tomorrow! Bring all the traction, and make sure to have extra socks and the bread bags! |
