Best blue skies day up there! 8 am solid sidewalk conditions up the Ammo trail to near the treeline, then packed snow up to the hut. Microspikes and snowshoes were the ticket. Crawford Path up to Washington well tracked and packed, microspikes were adequate. Exploring the Bigelow Lawn area over to Tuckermans, fresh snow/wind packed snow was peeling up in the warm sun and balling up on my microspikes and I wished I had left my crampons on my pack. Nothing deep up there though, just consolidated wind pack, so I didn't use snowshoes. Heading down from the hut on Ammo at 2 pm, a totally new scene: melting, unstable, slick and slushy snow surface in the hot sun on the steeps, very challenging to stay upright with microspikes, too steep for snowshoes. Farther down, in the shady cooler forest, the trail surface a little more stable but getting chopped up by foot traffic. I chose to go down the Ammo because I didn't want to push through the postholes and tree branches of the Jewell Trail, but the Ammo was tough, would have been nicer with crampons. |
