Peaks Mt. Starr King, Mt. Waumbek, NH
Trails
Trails: Starr King Road, Starr King Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, March 15, 2025
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: We parked at the gas station and walked up, but the upper parking lot was accessible later in the day with 3 cars present at 4 pm. It will only get better as the melt continues.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Snow - Spring Snow, Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: One stream easy to step over with another fully snow bridged still.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: As the woods are full of snow with blazes at knee height, the trail is up in the tops of the trees with a few branches that require stepping over or around, and a few duck unders. All are quite manageable.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: We met a handful of trail doggos all having a lovely day on the trail. Jimmy, a rough coated labrador, was calm and confident and happy to stop for a chat.
Bugs
Bugs: One misdirected mosquito floated by.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: One black balaclava, a water bottle, and one expensive looking pole with a cork handle were all at the trailhead. We found the pole in the middle of the upper parking lot intact and looking as if it had just been dropped today. Clean and dry.

Comments
Comments: Five adults and a 2 year old tyke enjoyed the day up Starr King. All but Dad and Tyke went on to Waumbec and the spur beyond that gets the great view of the Prezies. Don't miss taking those extra few steps past Waumbec. The conditions on the way up were crusty and our microspikes adequate. At Starr King we decided to carry our snowshoes on our feet instead of on our backs and were glad to have them over to Waumbec, where the trail was messy with postholes and granular, slippery snow. All turned to mashed potatoes (with gravy?) on the way down. One equipment failure (snowshoe) caused one of us to resort to microspikes, and she slid down the rest of the way. Snowshoes def recommended for warm afternoons. Our Tyke relished his snacks, grabbing Dad by the ears, and looking down at us from his backpack perch. His first mountain hike - hopefully the start of a lifetime love of the Whites. No Kestrel data but ~T=40 degrees with minimal wind. Lovely lenticular cloud bodes rain coming soon.
