Whoever ordered the extra large helping of mashed potatoes and gravy, it was delivered and liberally served on the Fire Wardens Trail today! After barebooting the roadwalk from Seven Dwarves to the trail, happily crunching along the remaining 1.3 miles in Khatoolas to the true trailhead, then the additional 1 miles along Twinway, we were cautiously optimistic our backpack ballasts wouldn’t have to be deployed. Alas, our hopes were dashed as we turned onto FW Trail and spied a myriad of shin deep post holes. Snowshoes were hastily donned, and we made our way up another .3 miles of bottomless pits before the two folks figured out their snowshoes had a job to do lol. From
2900 feet up, the track was as firm as one could hope after 7 pairs of snowshoes and 3 skiers did the best they could with the rising heat. By afternoon the sun had enacted its revenge for our beautiful blue skies yesterday, and we postholed in earnest , sliding off the monorail, and balancing on the many sections of eroding side hills. Despite the messy conditions, Hale vis FW is still stunning, and the massive snow pack allowed us to peep the Presidentials and even Old Speck! We wore snowshoes from the summit of Hale back to the private road, and hopefully smoothed things out to allow folks an early morning jaunt tomorrow. But snowshoes are the name of the game unless you enjoy miles of shin to booty-deep concrete-like wet snow. Welcome to shoulder season—-may the odds be ever in your favor. |
