Real mixed bag of conditions. Would definitely recommend at least having snowshoes with you so you don’t posthole too much with the warming temps. Spikes might be helpful in the morning, but they’ll probably have balling snow on them by the afternoon.
Trail started out pretty solid in the morning. Was able to barefoot up until the steep section heading up to Avalon. From there, spikes were needed. The trail remained pretty firm until the afternoon. With the sun shining, some sections of the trails were getting extremely soft. One step just a few inches off to the left or right would cause you to posthole if you weren’t careful. There’s a section of Willey Range Trail heading over from Field to Willey that was probably in direct afternoon sun and is collapsing fast. Snow on top of the trails was starting to get slushy and slippery as the afternoon sun warmed it.
All in all, still a fantastic day to be out on the trails. Plenty of people out having a great time. |
