Comments
Comments: Parked at Lowe’s Store with ample parking and headed up Lowe’s Path at 8:30AM with an eye on Mt Adams. Barebooted the first ¾ mile, but then switched to microspikes until tree line for what was mostly firm, yet softening snow with minimal ice as the temps rose on this sunny day. Layered up to face the very present and busy winds as we emerged from tree line despite the temps being very springlike. Those unremitting winds relentlessly whizzed at an est 50 mph as we climbed the mostly snow-free rocks toward Mt Abigail. We were getting blown around like rag dolls, but were able to huddle for a brief minute to be able to hear one another and the decision was made to head back and come for Adams another day. Once again below tree line the snow had since softened considerably, and if you were not directly on the 2’ monorail, then you were postholing up to your thigh. Come to think of it, if you were ON the monorail, you were still postholing. Snowshoes went on to face the challenge of very soft, steep mashed potato, and at times, granular conditions with temps in the 50Fs and lots of continued sunshine. No issues with balling, but a couple issues with sliding. A few chickadee’s, a red squirrel, a handful of stray equipment and two other hikers were all that was seen. Back to the car at 4:30PM.With the incoming rain starting tomorrow night coupled with ongoing spring-like temps this week, this trail should be a bonafide mess.
