 | Surface Conditions: |
Ice - Blue, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow - Spring Snow |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes, Light Traction |
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
I was most worried about crossing Silver Cascade Brook near the split of the Jackson and Webster branches of the trail. It was flowing fast, but the snow bridge is still firm for now. Easy crossing. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Webster Cliff Trail between Jackson and Webster is a mess. There are several small trees bending into the trail with their tops buried in snow. Some will spring back when the snow is gone, but many are broken and will need to be cleared. |

 | Comments: |
I went up the Jackson branch of the trail. There is a monorail down low developing to a stable trench up high. It was relatively firm all the way to the summit of Jackson. I wore spikes from the car to the summit.
Webster Cliff Trail is a different story. Apparently, there hasn't been a lot of traffic between Jackson and Webster lately. The snow is deep, the track is vague, and there are lots of trees bending into the trail. After post-holing up to my thighs three times, I switched to snowshoes. That made travel a bit easier, but between the "car wash" from the trees and the constant step-overs and crawl-unders, it was definitely spring conditions up there.
I kept snowshoes on for the descent down the Webster branch of the Jackson-Webster trail. After crossing Silver Cascade Brook (see water crossing notes), I switched back to spikes.
Oh, and great views from both Jackson and Webster! |
