Comments
Comments: Conditions up to Little Haystack were pretty perfect, snow was packed firmly and microspikes worked great. On the ridge, a mix of bare rock and small patches of snow and ice- we barebooted but microspikes would have helped at some points. Past the summit of Lafayette, the snow got a lot less packed and snowshoes were necessary. The snow is still quite high, so beware the branches across the trail on the way to Garfield! After the summit of Garfield, the trail got a bit more packed but was still fairly soft on the way to Gale River Trail. Gale River Trail perfect for the first mile or so, then got softer. When I hiked it, there was still snow all the way down but that may not hold by next weekend. Gale River Loop Road was a mix of dirt and snow- not skiable.

There was no water at the Garfield spring but a number of places to fill up on the way down Gale River.
