We hiked up Bemis, up Arethusa, and back down Arethusa. I would not recommend attempting to descend via Bemis because the steep part (as you might imagine) is icy.
There is a legitimate and stable monorail on at least 80% of this route.I was pleasantly surprised because we left the parking area at 1230pm in full sun and 62 degrees! There is ice under the thinner snow layers, particularly near both Bemis and Arethusa Falls. There are significant postholes on the Bemis Brook Trail, and not so many on the Arethusa Trail. Arethusa-Ripley Falls Trail has definitely seen some foot traffic but not as much as the route I was on today. I wore rock spikes and they were perfect. I was able to grip the center of the monorail and not fall off. The bare booters I saw were having a lot of trouble doing that. It’s never wrong to wear snowshoes, this time of year, but there is a lot of bare rock so you will beat them up.
The falls were running like a postcard photo - yay for spring conditions! |
