Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The water levels were high, and the water flow was strong on all the small brooks crossing the trails. All brooks can be crossed on rocks.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails in good condition. Noticed one tree cut on the Baldface Circle Trail that had been an obstruction in February. One tree across the Slippery Brook Trail that is easy to walk around. A couple of small trees down on the Eastman Mountain Trail that were easy to get by. The yellow placards on the Eastman Mountain Trail are scarce. During the non-snow season this is not a problem. In the winter in the open hardwood forest section it is a bit challenging to follow the trail. I managed to follow the trail without deviation but some may wander off the trail.

Comments
Comments: There were a range of surface conditions; bare ground, frozen slush, snow, and running water. Used microspikes to halfway up Slippery Brook Trail whereupon I changed to snowshoes with traction. Snowshoes were necessary on the Eastman Trail as the snow was not consistently consolidated. Even with snowshoes, I frequently fell up to 1 to 1.5 feet into the snow. I don't think there was a lot of traffic to Eastman Mountain this winter. The hike on the Eastman Mountain Trail was arduous. There was no discernable track in places as it was just a smooth snow surface. The payoff were the great views from the summit. Views in many directions as one moves around to the various ledges. There is a cairn marking the summit. I was pleasantly surprised that the descent on the Slippery Brook Trail was not slippery on the frozen slush and mushy snow. Also, the water flow in the brooks on descent wasn't much different than on the ascent. Sometimes, the water increases later in the day when the temperatures are warm. As expected, nobody had hiked on the Slippery Brook Trail beyond the intersection with Eastman Mountain - Baldface Knob trails.
Nice to hike with two ER doctors who skied up the Slippery Brook Trail. They headed up to Baldface Knob and South Baldface when I headed for Eastman Mountain.
