Rock hopping the main branch of Lincoln Brook was fine, however the hidden danger right now is the random streams you can’t see undermining the snow. I soaked my feet and bumped my knee on a rock when I suddenly broke through the crust. |

Owl’s Head in Spring - it’s not something I recommend, although I did it in April last year and I don’t remember it being so bad. Today was a mild but windy day with fog hanging around the peak. I underestimated how much snow was still out there greatly. LW trail from the beginning was solid ice. I followed a monorail through bare woods to Black Pond, but after joining LB trail the snow got much much deeper in the shade of the valley. It was a game of post hole-roulette balancing in the middle of the footpath. I probably should have turned around with the warm temps and possible rain coming, but somehow I made it to the summit and back and only ended up with wet feet, muddy pants and a banged knee. A hard earned check off the list. |
