 | Comments: |
I closed out winter 2024 on what felt like a late spring day, as did at least 30 other folks. Despite the traffic and 40+ degree temps, the monorail remained rock solid all the way to the summit, with the exception of the sections in full sun. Even those sections, while slushy, did not result in postholes. The sides of the trail were littered with impressive postholes, so remaining on the monorail is key to preserve ankles, knees, and dry feet. The rapid decline of winter’s snowpack is astounding, as not only is the bench overlook visible, but all the bog bridges are fully defrosted, and the alpine zone vegetation with its purple beauty is on full display. I used my KTS until partway up Webster trail, then removed them when there was more rock than snow/ice. While I didn’t venture to Eisenhower, trail reports from my fellow hikers was snowshoes needed for the middle section between the two peaks. Spring conditions, but it looks like winter is making a comeback this weekend! |
