Comments
Comments: First ones up this morning. Below freezing overnight temps made for an easy ascent in spikes. 1-2 inches of fresh powder on top of monorail, which was occasionally elevated but mostly on level with surrounding soft snow. Stepping off you will posthole. We were lucky to follow a single, and then double set of coyote tracks who hiked most the way up Gorge Brook and did a great job of staying on the monorail! All postholes were on edge or off trail, and there were some DEEP ones! As previous report stated, the final switchback section is a bit dicey with a very thin elevated monorail with a 10+ foot drop into spruce on the downhill side and a five foot drop into spruce wells on the uphill slope. When this section deteriorates it is going to be really dicey but was fine this morning with poles/care. Some drifting on summit and ridge but short lived so snowshoes remained on back. First tracks up South Peak and snow was still firm. Once below intersection on Carriage Road our spikes immediately began severe balling so we barebooted to lodge with zero postholing and minimal slipping/sliding. Saw tons of people starting late including many without snowshoes who I guess are going to posthole and tear up the softening trail. Overall an A+ March day-early start was critical for good ground conditions.
