A spectacular day above treeline. A few inches of snow overnight produced powder on crust conditions in the morning. It was hillsounds until Ammo got steep and then crampons to bite through the fluff to the firm base. Stayed with crampons until heading up Washington where bareboots were the best choice. There is enough exposed rock to just step rock to rock. I started moving so much faster once I ditched the traction. From that point, it was back to hillsounds descending Washington, as it was fairly icy here. Jewell junction to the Jefferson/Clay col could have warranted snowshoes, it was deeper and drifty here. But by the time I returned enough people had come through to produce a firm bootpack. Bareboots up and down Jefferson, Hillsounds for the ascent up to the Jewell junction and stayed on for the descent. Jewell was getting sloppy and slushy and had a lot of postholing, but it was managable. Temps tonight should firm it up tomorrow. |
