Comments: Hit the trail around 7 AM with microspikes but switched to snowshoes once things got steeper. I broke trail up to Field—there was about 1–3 inches of fresh snow and some light drifting. The center of the trail was firm, but stepping even slightly off would result in a posthole or falling into a hidden tree well. Lots of postholes throughout the day.

Early on the way to Willey, there’s a steep section I’d consider a no-fall zone—it’d be tough to climb back up if you slipped. The Range Trail over to Tom and down A-Z was in good shape, though it started to get slushy as the day warmed up. From about 1 PM to 4 PM, snowmelt from the trees made it feel like light rain.

Saw a few folks out with just spikes—might be fine for Tom and Field, but I wouldn’t recommend going to Willey without snowshoes. You’ll definitely posthole in the warmer conditions. Met some friendly hikers along the way!
