Early start and a fast hike in perfect conditions. First mile is a mix of an ice monorail and just frozen trail covered in maybe an eighth inch of snow. Great traction in just my boots. Second mile is packed frozen snow. Very few potholes considering yesterday's temps. Bare boots to just beyond the Sosman tr then spikes to the top. Could've gone the whole way up, but didn't want to find out I needed traction while standing in gale-force winds. Took the left side up though both were previously broken out. I was the third person on the summit behind two young gentlemen. Spikes back to the trailhead. Cold and windy, but gorgeous morning. Wore my three-season boots with waterproof socks and toe warmers and my feet were perfect. Snowshoes went for a ride. |
