Comments
Comments: Lincoln woods had a coating of new snow with ice below and some open ground with standing/running water. Monorail starting on The Black Pond Trail with deep mud in areas as you approach Black Pond. The bog at the north end of Black Pond was easily crossed on slab ice and rocks. The monorail continued across the first bushwhack. We deviated low in the middle section of the whack. Lincoln Brook Trail was a mixed bag with many post holes hidden by new snow. This section is usually a quick walk but not today. We left the trail early for a side-slope bushwhack of about a mile up to where Brutus meets the drainage about halfway up. Not quite enough snow on this SW facing slope (upper half of Brutus) for snowshoes but we put them on for the traction. Snowshoes worked well from the top of the slide to the summit and back, below that, the snow was clumping on them. The snowpack off trail is stable and generally supports your weight. At Lower elevations the snow was getting wet in the afternoon to the point that micro-spikes were useless as the snow was balling up on them.
