I'm sure these conditions will continue to rapidly evolve over the coming days but writing about what it looked like today. Went up Mt. Major trail. About an inch of fresh crusty snow with a slight increase towards the top, in my opinion helped with traction, and I didn't have to put on micro spikes until near the top. Also as you near the top a nice coating of ice on most trees. No views due to cloud cover. Snow did hide some icy areas but looks like for the most part once this latest inch of snow melts there won't be much left. Lake is still mostly ice covered but can't imagine that'll last much longer. Went down via an unmarked trail, uneventful, but I did wear micro spikes the whole way. I try to avoid the Brook trail this time of year due to conditions. Talked to a guy near the top who said he came up the Boulder trail and whoever was before him didn't follow the blazes very well so keep an eye out for that. |
