Got started around dawn, well..there would have been dawn but instead it was raining.
Lincoln Woods in excellent condition, no spikes, no snowshoes needed.
Wilderness trail—>Zealand Hut we saw no other tracks, broke trail the whole way.
Wilderness and Bondcliff trail we were easily able to bareboot, 3-4 inches of snow over hard packed trail. Couple of hidden potholes, but no major hazards.
Breaking treeline changed conditions significantly…and I actually did it… I put on snowshoes…
Half to a full inch of ice atop 4 inches of fresh snow made for breaking crust for the entire rest of the 15 miles between summits. It was slow going, snowshoes helped save my shins from black and blues for sure.
Bondcliff and Bond went without incident, no views, just a slog from peak to peak.
Lost the trail at least three times due to blow downs getting to West Bond. Naturally we did our best to find the trail, but gosh it really disappeared on us a few times.
Getting onto the Twinway junction and heading up Guyot was more of the same, lots of tight squeezes between heavily laden trees, some blowdowns and generally tough going all with that damn ice crust. On past Guyot, and wouldn’t you know it, even more ice crust, the whole way Zealand, Zeacliff and all the way to the hut.
Hut caretaker, Silas, was very kind and we enjoyed the chance to warm a bit before barebooting out Zealand Trail and Zealand road back to the car.
Rained/Sleeted just about the whole day. Good thing there are no such thing as bad conditions, only bad attitudes! We had a blast, checked four more off the grid for my partner, and will be back next month. |
