On this 20 degree sunny morning, the trail was firm and the snow packed. Used light traction the whole way. Past Pike's Peek, the slabs were free of snow and ice. But the stretches between the slabs were mostly granular snow. Visited Pike's Peek as well as other two spur trails for great views. The start of the spur trails are signed - "East Cliff" and "Newfound View." There are cairns along the spur trails. There is one icy section in the Hemlock forest a bit past the vernal pool. Hard ice is fairly extensive and foreboding, but with it being open forest, one can easily avoid the ice. We passed a big group of happy senior hikers on our way down. The trail was noticeably better where they had passed through as they smoothed out all the frozen footprints in the snow. At higher elevations, it looked like there was still a decent snow base where snowshoes might be needed on a warmer day, but not today. Happy trails! |
