All were open and rock-hoppable, though I went a little up/downstream to find decent rocks at the larger crossings. There is a lovely log at the crossing closest to the TH but it was glazed ice in the morning so watch out for that. |

After much deliberation decided to sacrifice a Presi day to get this one in before trails deteriorate - grateful I did! Roads and lower part of Gale River were either mud or bare trail, didn't put on spikes until the last big stream crossing heading up. Switched to snowshoes not long after that, as there was just enough new snow to be annoying without them. Variable amounts of new snow, highest amounts up on the Twins but never more than about 5" on top of a stable-ish base trail, frozen today. I saw one other dude who was hoofing it without snowshoes, but his occasional very deep posthole made me glad for the 'shoes. There's also no discernible track in some places especially on the North Twin Spur, so it's easy to wander off the beaten path.
Overall surprisingly good conditions for April, and still a LOT of snow up at high elevations. Frost trail is still unrecognizable, the tops of trees at knee height in some spots. Not quite enough for a view from Galehead summit this year. Obviously, warm and wet weather, maybe more snow, incoming tomorrow and over the weekend will change trail conditions. |
