Comments
Comments: Started early and managed to get up and down before the rain started - yay! Trail is pretty messy down low, below and including the steeps...very choppy and rough. Combo of all things spring - bare trail, mud, patchy ice and snow, snow. Snow was mostly firm and crusty in the early AM, a little softer in the PM. Barebooted in the AM until the steeps and then put on spikes which stayed on for the rest of the hike. Had trail crampons with me, but didn't feel the need to use them. There were a few short sections where it looked like someone butt slid on the steeps which were very smooth and slick. I went a little to the side in the softer snow to get better purchase...trickier to manage on the way down than the way up. Above the steeps, the trail was packed well and could see evidence of the previous snowshoe track. Gets a little confusing between the peaks with multiple tracks in spots where it looks like folks tried to navigate blowdowns, but they all get you to the same place so all good - pick your path. Some old, deep postholes through here that are pretty easy to avoid. Saw four people all day, everyone in spikes with one carrying snowshoes. Snowshoes in my opinion would be difficult down low and on the steeps due to the exposed rocks / roots and overall choppy trail. Could maybe use them up above the steeps if you wanted, but they were not necessary today with the mostly firm conditions. It did start to rain when I got back to the TH around 12:45, so these conditions may be very different by tomorrow.
