After Friday’s warm up we were prepared for a frozen post-holed mess when we stepped on trail. So imagine our surprise after a mile of intermittent rocks, mud, slush and standing water to find the white sidewalk we’ve been craving ALL WINTER, courtesy of a single out and back MSR LA track. Not all heroes wear capes, and thanks to this anonymous rock star, the trail from the second water crossing to the summit is wide and rock hard. At the junction, the right side of the loop has not been broken out with snowshoes recently, so watch the post holes. The standard left loop has an elevated monorail, and the last switchback has a few icy sections that require careful foot placement and tree grabbing. The first 4 rocks of the true summit have emerged from the snowpack, a sure sign of spring slowly defeating winter. However, if temps remain in the 20s to 30s the trail should have a few more solid runs before full on shoulder season |
