Since I was the first hiker today, I had the pleasure of breaking out 4 inches of powdery snow on the trail at the start. I started in spikes, but after the last water crossing, I put on snowshoes near the outlook. I was happy I carried them because it made the hike up the steep section so much easier with televators. The rock steps were totally covered and the snow got deeper as I was ascending. Under the new snow, there was hard packed, icy snow. The loop on the left side to the summit was tricky. There were deep drifts to start and then shortly after, a narrow, icy monorail on a slant. Lots of tree grabbing in this section.
On the hike down, many hikers were heading up with just spikes. I switched back to spikes with 1/2 mile remaining. The consistency of the snow changed in a few hours and was clumping on the bottom of the spikes. I was glad I started early with the light fluffy powder. It was a beautiful wintry morning in April. |
