Comments
Comments: Hayes offered a wide range of shoulder season trail conditions today. Went O&B. Started from lot before the tressle to follow Hogan road which was dry to Mahoosuc Trail. I barebooted a good ways through an inches worth of fresh powder. Varies from minimal mud, to some significant mud though can work around in parts, there were some areas with poor drainage you just had to walk through. Waterproof boots a must. Some slippery leaves, some rocks with ice that were avoidable, though per my preference there was a point where snow covered ice in some areas past the mascot Pond sign & this is where I wore spikes the remainder. Sticky sticky, ball up your spikes snow, banged em up every few hundred feet. Slabs were not treacherous to visit, for incredible views of the Presis, plenty of sun to dry anything wet of concern. Past the slabs in the trees there was frozen post holes in some areas, this was the only place I had an issue that snow covered these enough to take caution. Summit is a lil pile of rocks, no view.. not far just to say you did it. I will also say, per your judgement, I certainly did not see a need for snowshoes at any point.. But I tend to be of the variety who prefers to have them this time of year.. so they came with, but just for the ride.
