Some fresh sticky snow, the kind that clumps on snowshoes making them useless, but gives traction for bare boots. I started at 9:45 in bare boots, following one set of tracks. I put spikes on for water crossings, then switched to snowshoes around the loop trail as it got deeper and steeper. Once on the ridge it was about 6” of powder that was softening in the sun. I would recommend doing the loop clockwise, because the trail up South had less exposed roots and rocks. My descent down North was slow and tedious, and I fell hard once - powder on hard ice with rocks and roots exposed, and insanely steep. Crampons might work better. My plan for the day was to bushwhack out over the Hitchcocks, but I quickly gave up on that after hitting thick woods, plus the footing was slippery so it will have to wait for another time when the snow is consolidated. |
