Comments
Comments: With a mixed bag of trip reports leading up to this hike, I was pleasantly surprised by how great conditions were by April standards. Started at 10 am and 5 groups had already been out ahead of me. The trails had all been trampled down nicely by the time I arrived. The first quarter mile of Rocky Branch was patchy dry ground/snow. The snow starts more consistently after this and progressively gets deeper. With the exception of a few small muddy sections around engine hill, it is solid and firm everywhere. I barebooted all the way to Davis Path with no issues. Used spikes up here since it was a bit slick but still not too bad. Passed a handful of other hikers throughout the day with a mixed bag of footwear ranging from bare boots to snowshoes. The lower elevations began to soften in the afternoon but it wasn't super warm so it held up. Overall I give the conditions today a solid A-. Get it while the getting is good
