Lion Head winter route is in fairly good shape, with a few spots on the tricky section where there is barely enough snow over the rocks for crampons to bite into. That made a few places somewhat difficult (at least for me). Maybe if I'd tried a different angle it would have been easier. Nearing the upper part of the winter route where it starts to open up, I slipped a bit in the surface snow over the frozen stuff beneath. That problem was only going to increase as the day warmed up in the sun, so being alone I opted not to descend that way. Since I needed Old Jackson Road, I went down the auto road to that point. Actually, doing this gives some unique perspectives on the views that I haven't seen before. Old Jackson Road is about half soft snow a few inches deep, half mud/dry/rocks. Not too bad.
Crampons for the winter route, microspikes for the rest except where it was bare. |
