A little bit of everything, trail condition-wise. Packed snow/ice on Whitehouse Trail, then bare trail /running water on Liberty Springs for awhile. It was spikes on/spikes off morning until above the large stream crossing (which was rock-hoppable), when ice/snow began in earnest. I found spikes (I had Hillsounds) very helpful as the ice was very hard in the morning on the steep section up to Liberty Springs tentsite. I kept them on for the final approach to Liberty, though there was bare rock as well as ice. Snow on the Franconia Ridge trail was starting to get soft, but still firm enough so my snowshoes went for a ride. Gorgeous day -- sunny, low wind -- on the summit. Decided not to go on to Flume this time and instead spend a little longer savoring the views on Liberty. Met 4 people on the way down, plus, halfway down, one family with young children and no spikes. When the dad asked me about continuing, I discouraged him, explaining the steepness and ice, and he chose to turn around. Did see one barebooter, but I found spikes important. Ice had softened some by the time I descended late morning, so was grippier than earlier. Temps from 37 degrees at 7:30 to 67 degrees by 1:30. Another great day in the Whites! |
