A full array of hiking conditions today. Summer-like dry conditions on the bottom half - stream crossings with rock-hopping. As you increase elevation you start hitting patches of consolidated snow and ice. The icy surface still has some grip because it is littered with embedded with evergreen needles and dirt. Next, stable mono-rail with a dash of unstable mono-rail in about 12 inches of consolidated snow/ice. The consolidated levels increase with elevation. Bare-booted to within 2/10 of a mile of summit with no issues. Quite a steep pitch with some clear white ice and 2-3 feet of softening snow on final switchback. Blasted up with snowshoes to peak. Summit is free from snow with gorgeous views. Snowshoed back down 8/10 of a mile from peak to around 3500 elevation - post-holed once with snowshoes on. It really softened up high fast. Then switched to nano-spikes; Hillsound trail crampons stayed in the bag today. Switched back to bare-boots at first switchback. 68 degrees at base upon finish. The road walk adds 2.4 miles round trip. Ten other hikers out today. |
