Comments
Comments: Beautiful, very warm day on Mount Chocorua! It felt more like May 25 than April 25, especially in the low elevation hardwood forest. I first ascended Hammond and encountered good trail conditions with no snow or ice up to the Weetamoo intersection. I then descended Weetamoo and encountered several patches of rotting snow, including a couple slick spots but nothing that requires spikes. Once I reached the Piper intersection, I made my way up toward the summit of Chocorua. The Piper trail is in great shape down low, and I only started encountering snow/ice around 3,000’. Prior to gaining the ridge, it’s mostly unstable monorail that you can often avoid and I did not find it to be much of a hassle. Once gaining the ridge, it was a pretty consistent monorail that I found to be relatively stable. I never felt a need to put on spikes. The summit cone is bare rock, and I encountered intermittent unstable monorail descending the Liberty trail until around 2,200’. I would still recommend bringing spikes on the off chance the temps drop or we get another storm, but I found I could pretty easily get by without them today.
