Comments
Comments: Cognizant of the incoming rain and nursing a freshly injected knee, I opted for the shorter, drier option of Waumbek over Moosilauke, and I’m so glad we did! Bare boots on dry ground for the first mile, with avoidable mud and great conditions! At the mile point the monorail appeared, first as ice, then an actual raised monorail that was firm enough to walk on but soft enough our Hillsound crampons had excellent bite. At no point did we need to switch to our K-10s. The monorail is solid and sure except for the sections where blowdowns landed, so be prepared to contort your body to avoid sinking to your knees (I wasn’t too fond of that, but fortunately it was above 50 degrees). Slab next to Starr King is free of snow and ice, and the summit cairn at Waumbek is 100% without snow. We had to posthole to the second viewpoint, as it wasn’t really broken out after the last storm. It drizzled for about 5 minutes in between our trek from Starr King to Waumbek, but it was a short-lived shower, and we made it off the mountain before the rain began again. Am absolutely perfect #161/576!
