Wet, April conditions. First snow traces at around 2,800 ft. Barebooted to Zeta Pass, then spiked to the shoulder of Carter Dome. Carter Dome from Zeta was quite challenging with significant blowdown and the monorail melted at a sharp side angle into the trees making for awkward spiking. On the shoulder I began postholing and switched to snowshoes to the summit and back down to Zeta. Shoeshoes were the ticket returning to Zeta Pass. Bareboots to South, then spikes until intersection of Imp Trail. I lost the trail on the north shoulder of South Carter in a large blowdown. Backtrack and shift east if you follow postholes downhill into thick trees. Big blowdown at intersection to North Carter, missed the turn and had to back track. A rocky, bareboot from Imp down and out. Light snow up high obscuring footprints. Snowshoes optional, but I found helpful on summit of Carter Dome. |
