Bare ground until right below the downhill to the water ravine. (Last crossing). Then ice from last of monorail. After the Ski Trail intersection there starts off bare ground and avoidable ice. After half mile reached unavoidable snow and ice. Put on spikes here which remained on until I reached the same point on the descent. The trail alternated between stable monorail, unstable narrow monorail, solid snow on the steeps before the ridge, and soft new snow above the Sosman junction. This did ball up on my spikes. As it turned out there was no balling heading down from the ridge. In fact that new snow was the only balling I had. However even though I only saw four other hikers the monorail was turning to slush.
Not bad condition wise but I was off the snow before noon and it was warm today so more deterioration may have happened. Every hiker rushing down has an impact on the soft snow. |
