Beautiful day on trails offering a little of almost everything today. Bare booted most of this hike up to 3800. Snow appears in the woods at around 3400'. Patches of snow and ice begin to show up more frequently on the trail at 3600'; but most of these patches can be avoided or the snow was shallow and soft enough to get some grip. At 3800' the snow depth increases significantly on a semi hard packed monorail. Snow shoes are a must beyond this point since the monorail was only semi supportive, despite several patches of bare ground. I slipped off just a little, and ended in a spruce trap, snowshoe and all; took some digging to get out. Also took a quick diversion to the NW peak for no real reason; beautiful mossy woods.
Chatted with the owner of the 7 Dwarfs briefly in the AM, he said a group attempted the Twins a day earlier, but the water levels were too high for safe crossings on rocks. |
