Parked at Ammonusuc, up Jewel. Limited, short stretches of Monorail, easily traversable, until about the 3,500-foot level, then solid until treeline. I didn't use traction, though it would have made the last 100 feet or so a little easier. Some ice, but avoidable, on Gulfside. It was a beautiful spring day on the summit, with a cool breeze but not cold. Down the short stretch on Nelson Crag, with no issues. Cog trail, something new to me, was good until just above Jacob's Ladder. There is a long stretch (100 yards or so) of deep snow that slopes away from the tracks. I needed micro-spikes and patience to get through that part, then smooth sailing. Having never done the Cog Trail before, it was definitely a quick descent. I would describe it as similar to the lower sections of Tuckerman's Ravine trail, except steeper, and every rock you step on slides. I saw just one other hiker, and about 20 skiers. |
