 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Free parking (and a port-a potty!) at Ferncroft Road for about 40 cars. Nicest parking lot in the Whites, just don't park along Ferncroft road or in the neighboring hay fields. |
 | Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable |
 | Recommended Equipment: |
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
One water crossing on Dicey's Mill Trail - log still there to walk across, but several in our group easily waded/rock hopped through. |
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Blowdowns on Rollins and Dicey's Mill, but all easy to step over, under or around. |
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
None seen, but only a very athletic dog would be able to get up the scrambles on Blueberry Ledges |
 | Bugs: |
Mosquitos at the start of Blueberry Ledges Trail. Low temps, wind and rain scared away the bugs on Dicey's Mill Trail, but expect it to be buggier in coming days/weeks |

Weather was better than expected today, with the temps hovering in the 40s and the rain holding off until the descent down Dicey's Mill. This loop is almost entirely under the trees so fairly sheltered from winds. We lucked out with dry ledges for the scrambles up Blueberry Ledges, with great views looking east from the ledges. These are labeled Class II, doable for most with good boot traction, but wouldn't attempt if the ledges are wet. For the biggest scramble (where the bolt holes of the removed ladder are still visible), sticking to the far left is your best bet.
Rollins Trail was a bit muddy, but nothing crazy. Dicey's Mill up to the top of Passaconaway had a few scrambles--easier to go up Dicey's and down Walden Trail. The summit of Passaconaway is a bit hidden - turn south off the main trail and look for the tree with "SUMMIT" carved into it. There is an outlook west of the summit down a .3 mile trail, but we didn't check it out because the whole summit was in the clouds by that point in the afternoon.
Dicey's Mill is long, lots of nice stone steps going down, but honestly a bit boring after the fun of Blueberry Ledges. Definitely recommend doing the full Whteface/Passaconaway loop if you can nab a relatively dry day. |
