OAB trip as far as The Bulge. Mill Brook Road is open. Unknown Pond Trail to Kilkenny Ridge to The Horn Spur. A few blowdowns on The Horn spur trail but more significant on ascent to The Bulge. Trails were generally in good shape even with all the recent precipitation. A few spots even dried out in just a few hours with the persistent wind along the ridge.
A moderate to easy hike. Nothing steep or overtly technical expect at The Horn. There are a lot of roots and rocks on the trail so it was quite slippery in spots. A nice stand of birch along Mill Brook Stream on the ascent. Some nice stone work along the trail above Unknown Pond. The Horn gives a rough 270 degree view, which included the The Pilot Range, Cabot, The Bulge and beyond. The Horn is quite unique and I anticipate a return in the future.
For a NEHH sub-4000er, the trail conditions were better than most - for those less traveled and accessed, generally speaking. Part of the draw!! |
