Comments
Comments: On the Outlook we noted that Success was socked in; we were drenched and muddy and decided we didn’t need to hike to a sign with no views so we puttered around looking at the artifacts near the Mahoosuc Trail junction and headed back down. The trail has long stretches of unavoidable mud and deep running water. We saw patches of snow but next to none on the trail, so our rock spikes went for a ride. On the drive in we saw a beautiful broad-winged hawk, and it was so uninterested in us that we got to watch it for a good while. On the hike up we spooked a spruce grouse (you know, we were like 5’ from it and it went nutters flapping around and being dramatic). On the way down we noted that it had actually been sitting on a nest of 9 eggs. This nest is less than 2’ from the trail and is directly beneath a “Success Trail” sign. My dog really wanted the eggs (she didn’t bother them) so if you are hiking with a dog, over the next few weeks, use caution to protect the nest! Photos of the hawk and the nest are on my social media.
