Comments
Comments: Followed Old Waterville Road from south to north. The road walk section wasn't ideal, but the rest of it was nice - very smooth footing, and flat to gentle grades. Saw a few cyclists but no other hikers. Took me just under an hour to reach the north trailhead.

On the way back, I wanted to mix it up, so I took a trail shown on Alltrails that runs between Old Waterville Road and Route 49. This was much more of a footpath - narrower, rougher (though still not too rough), and more twisty than the old road. This brought me back to Old Waterville Road just south of Pine Flats Trail - there are actually two short paths that lead from Old Waterville Road to the junction of Pine Flats Trail and Yellow Jacket Trail. I then took Pine Flats Trail back - Smarts Brook was running well.
