Comments
Comments: Tough spring conditions wore me out. Trails above treeline are basically postholes. I wore spikes the whole time above treeline, perhaps snowshoes would be the gear of choice. Slushy soft snow begins at about 3200ft. Conditions made some of the upper slab movements interesting, but certainly passable with traction. I put on Hillshounds at about 4400 ft. One hiker coming down wore 6-point trail crampons. I spoke with others who attempted to bareboot and turned back. From the hut to Monroe it was more of the same slog. Slow postholing up, but soft and fast coming down Monroe. Followed tracks of two hikers up Washington. Very slow going mostly postholing where I couldn't locate rocks to step on. Some 3-4ft deep drifts around Lake of the Clouds and below ledges. I followed one set of tracks down from the summit to Westside trail and over to the cog. Tracks continued towars the Jewel. Not sure if it is broken out. Cog was 8" to a foot of soft snow down to about 3000ft before patches opened up. Saw one skier go down the cog. Plenty of tourists at the summit via the cog. Summit roads are plowed and shops were open.
